Your Questions About How To Become A Lawyer In Australia

Helen asks…

How do I become a lawyer in Australia?

I’m an Australian citizen, born and bred, and I was wondering how I could become a lawyer. Currently I am in my first year of university in a Bachelor of Arts course. I plan on majoring in literature. Am I still able to become a lawyer? How would I be able to do this?

Your best bet is to ask you uni’s advisor / councillor about what subjects you need to take to find out what type of lawyer you would like to be

A gang of robbers broke into a lawyer’s club by mistake. The old legal lions gave them a fight for their life and their money. The gang was very happy to escape.

“It ain’t so bad,” one crook noted. “We got $25 between us.”

The boss screamed: “I warned you to stay clear of lawyers — we had $100 when we broke in!”

How can I become a lawyer in Australia?

I am studying bachelor of International Business, my program allowed me to combine a major in “Commercial Law”. If I finish this major, can I work as a lawyer after I graduate? Or any job that can get me into that field? Or do I need law school?(Sorry I don’t know much about law school)

Thank you very much!
What’s wrong with you two guys, what did I do?

I have a feeling that a double major in international business & commercial law will enable you to work as a lawyer, since to become a lawyer you will need to pass the bar exams, so your course will not cover those. The business course will definitely gives you some information on how to do business within the Australian laws, therefore making you quite crucial for international businesses who wants to do business with Austrlaian companies, or setting their business in Australia.

If you want to work as a lawyer, then you may have to change your course completely. I strongly suggest that you speak with your course counselor, law lecturers and perhaps even job counselor before making a rash decision. Also you need to know if you can transfer the units that you have done so you do not have to start all over again from 1st year.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your study :)

how many years do you have to study at university in Queensland, Australia, to become a lawyer or doctor?

i am in year 7 in nsw but at the end of the year i am moving to queensland. i am aspiring to either be a doctor or a lawyer, hence the question. any person that knows the answer please submit it. thankyou.

I don’t know about law school but here is how it is for medical: It depends on when you are entering or how much college you have already completed. If you will be entering right out of high school then it is 6 years. High school students in Australia can make the choice to become a doctor, then they can enter directly into college for it, the first couple of years they have their general education classes and the last years are the medical portion. It is all combined into one degree. But if you have already finished college, or will finish soon, you can enter into a medical program and it will take 4 years, so you would have a regular 4 year undergrad degree then 4 years of medical school.
